How important is your pulse rate while working out?
Can you tell me how to figure out the maximun heart rate for your age? Can you do permanent damage to your heart by exceeding your maximun heart rate regularly?

It is all relative to your level of physical conditioning and yes knowing your HR while working out can really help a lot depending upon what goals you are attempting to achieve. Say for instance, weight loss actually is best accomplished by maintaining your HR while working out in the 95 - 110 BPM range rather than cranking it up to your MAX rate. Look into ZONE training for further information..
